What the zones mean
Fire hazard severity zones describe the fire hazard of the land - vegetation, slope, fire history and weather - not the risk to a particular home, which also depends on how it is built and what is around it. In these zones California applies stricter building standards and defensible-space rules, and sellers must disclose the zone to buyers. A neighborhood outside the mapped zones can still burn.
Each share is the part of the neighborhood’s area, measured in an equal-area projection, that falls in each zone class. Every neighborhood page has the details, along with its flood zones and flood insurance claims.
